Wine, Whales & Wildflowers - Springtime in the Cape : 5-19 September 2009
Table Mountain & Aloe arborescens

The Fairest Cape in all the World

The Cape of Good Hope is the Mediterranean of the southern hemisphere - balmy weather, blue seas, fine wines and spectacular scenery. The Cape has enjoyed 400 years of historical development and is famous for Cape Dutch homesteads with collections of art and exquisite furniture. We visit in springtime, when the Proteas are in bloom and the countryside is covered in vast carpets of indigenous wildflowers.

Spring time – the Cape flowers

Cape Town is Africa’s jewel, and as well as Table Mountain and Robben Island we visit the wonderful Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, famous for collections of native plants including Leucadendrons, Proteas, and Restios. One of the hightlights is the Namaqualand flora of the Western Cape in the Olifants River.

Cape architecture and superb cuisine

We explore Cape Point, known for its extraordinarily rich fauna and flora. Visit Groot Constantia, the oldest wine farm in South Africa and a superb example of Cape Dutch architecture, and then go on to learn about the Cape’s world-class wines with a stay in the historic Huguenot town of Franschhoek in the heart of the wine region - famed for its outstanding cuisine.

Humpbacks and meercats

At Boulders Beach we meet colonies of Jackass penguins. There is also a chance to get close to Meerkats with a visit to a conservation project at Oudtshoorn, the ostrich farming capital of South Africa. Finally at Hermanus go in search of majestic Southern Right and Humpback Whales where they breed close into the shore off this stunning, wild coast.

Boutique hotels & fine wines

With our carefully chosen boutique accommodation, fine wines, picturesque scenery and unique flora and fauna, nowhere else in Africa can you see such variety in so much comfort.
