Coptic Monks and the Tears of Isis - Egypt : 14-29 March 2009

The Great Oasis at Siwa

Desert Monks

Early Coptic Hermits in search of total isolation founded monasteries in remote parts of Egypt. St Anthony’s is one of the most remarkable ecclesiastical buildings from early Christendom. We shall visit this religious foundation in the relatively unexplored Eastern Desert.

The Eternal Nile

Our cruise on the Nile is the most memorable way to absorb the atmosphere of ancient Egypt. Along its banks in Upper Egypt are the Philae Temple at Aswan, the Ptolemaic Temples of Horus at Kom Ombo and of Sobek and Horus the Elder at Edfu.

Ancient Egypt

Included in the tour are some of the monuments which epitomise ancient Egypt. After five millennia the Pyramids haunt the imagination. Further south lie the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, its tombs filled with wealth beyond dreams.

With Alexander to Siwa

Another highlight is a unique excursion through the Great Sand Sea of the Western Desert to the oases of Khârga, Dakhla and Farafra, to experience Egypt as it used to be. And we have a date with Alexander the Great at the oracular Temple of Amon in the great oasis of Siwah
