Father of Medicine
The Hellenistic Age of the Eastern Mediterranean ushered
in a new understanding of the human body and of medical
practice. Here some of the greatest scientists on earth
lived and worked, including Hippocrates of Kos, the
Father of Medicine, certainly the best known physician
of antiquity.
The Age of Galen
Hippocrates was born into a world where science excelled.
Further up the coast, Miletus was home to Thales, considered
to be the originator of scientific thought. And in the
succeeding Roman era, at Pergamum practised the physician
Galen, for whom Aristotle and Hippocrates were like
gods of medicine.
