Istanbul and a Lycian Cruise - a Selwyn College Cruise 7-17 July 2007

A Drama of Theatres

This cruise is full of theatres, tombs and the beautiful Taurus Mountains which in Lycia rise from the sea to heights of over 10,000 feet. It's one of our most popular itineraries because of the ancient sites and the outstanding scenery

Mountain Vistas

Because of the spectacular mountain scenery the sea passage has changed little in appearance over the last few thousand years, with dramatic peaks and deep-set wooded inlets seen from the coast.

Classical Gems

The area has wonderful Classical cities like Xanthos, Phaselis and Myra which feature widely in the history of the eastern Mediterranean. Among the gems is the beautiful mountain city of Arykanda, in the alpine-like valleys behind Phoenix (Finike). Its pine fringed stadium and theatre are reminiscent of Delphi. There are also rare sites like Oenanda and Pinara in the Akdag Mountains.

Beautiful Islands

Other lovely places include Kekova, probably the most beautiful part of the Mediterranean, with a host of islands making it a water wonderland. For those who enjoy the cruising life there is also plenty of relaxation and swimming.

The Comfort of a Private Cruise

We shall use our own classic yachts built in Halicarnassus to a Byzantine design, but fitted with the most modern conveniences – private bathrooms with each double or twin cabin; our own personal chefs to prepare the excellent Turkish cuisine; our own stewards to wait on our every need. It’s a perfect way to relax, to learn and to absorb the ambience of the epic past.

Accompanied by our Selwyn Scholar

Our Selwyn College tour is led by Selwyn Classicist Dr Rupert Thompson. It is designed not for the specialist but for people who have an enquiring mind.
